710: What is It, and What Does it Have to Do With Weed?

Cannabis culture is filled with unique slang that adds a bit of fun and revelry to enjoying weed. For example, 420 comes from the time of day that a group of teens would gather to look for a lost cannabis field. However, 710 is a new term that has popped up, and may cause some confusion for beginners and veterans alike.

In this article, we'll talk about what 710 is, where it came from, and how you can make it part of your special weed celebrations, like 420.

710: What is It, and What Does it Have to Do With Weed?

What Is 710?

710 specifically refers to cannabis wax and concentrates. For example, if someone says an event is "710-friendly," they are specifically referencing concentrates and wax, not just weed in general. Some say that "710" became synonymous with concentrates because it looks like the word "oil" flipped upside down (though there's a bit of disagreement about the exact origins).

Like 420, which represents a date, 710 has come to represent July 10th (or 7/10), a day where wax and concentrate enthusiasts can celebrate their favorite form of THC. It can also represent a time (similar to how 420 first started as 4:20pm).

A Brief History of 710 Day

Unlike the history of 420, which has a clear history of its origins and who first celebrated it, 710 is more obscure. No one has directly claimed to be the originator of the term, and we still don't have a clear idea of when exactly it started.

However, we do know a few details. The term 710 has been around for about a decade (maybe a few years more, depending on who you're asking), and was likely a code word used when buying THC products via the black market. If customers specifically wanted concentrates or oils, they would ask their dealer for "710."

While we don't know how exactly 710 first came to be, we do know how it was brought into the mainstream. TaskRok, an underground rapper and advocate for weed, began to push for the term 710 to be a new term for concentrates. His 2011 album The Movement can be described as a "call to action" to bring 710 to the mainstream, and with songs like Boil the Oil and 7:10, it's clear that he's specifically calling for 710 to refer to waxes.

Over the last decade, 710 has taken a life of its own, and has clearly cemented itself into cannabis pop culture.

Where Did 710 Come From?

TaskRok seems to be the first person to push the term into the mainstream, but after he introduced 710, it took a bit for the term to catch on. In 2013, two years after the release of The Movement, LA Weekly ran an article with the headline, "Marijuana: 710 Is the New 420."

In 2015, the Errl Cup, a cannabis festival and awards organization based in Arizona, had a category called the 710 Degree Cup specifically for concentrates. Since then, other organizations and companies have hopped on the 710 bandwagon, and it's common to see the term used by dispensaries and headshops.

The Benefits of Being 710-Friendly

The terms 710 and 420 both refer to weed but being "710-friendly" can be different from being "420-friendly." If you're at an event or location that describes itself as 420 friendly, that generally means all forms of weed are acceptable, including smoking, vaping, and edibles. If an event is 710-friendly, that usually means only concentrates are allowed.

What's the difference? When you consume concentrate, you don't actually "smoke" anything. Concentrates create vapor, unlike bud, which can be smoked or vaped. An event might be 710-friendly because they don't want smoke to be present. So, while you probably aren't hauling around a full-blown dab rig, you might want to make sure you have a vape pen and cart handy.

So, 4/20 Is a Big Holiday. Is 7/10 a Holiday as Well?

It's not as popular as 4/20 (yet), but 7/10 is an informal holiday celebrated by cannabis enthusiasts who love concentrates! Whether you use wax, shatter, or carts of oil, you'll be joined by thousands in spirit if you vape on 7/10. It's also a good chance to find great deals on oil carts, waxes, vape pens, and even dab rigs.

Final Thoughts on 710

Though 710 doesn't enjoy the depth of history or notoriety of 420, it's still an up-and-coming piece of cannabis pop culture. It's also a great chance to try concentrates for the first time, and oil carts and simple vape pens are a great way to start celebrating! Make sure you're ready to party appropriately on 7/10 at 7:10 p.m.
